What is a Maternity Nurse?

A maternity nurse is a qualified professional employed on a short-term basis, to support and assist parents in the care of their newborn baby. They will advise and educate you in all aspects of your baby's care.

What does a Maternity Nurse do?

A maternity nurse is a professional whose primary responsibility is the welfare of mother and baby. They can offer guidance and help in:

  • Bonding Feeding
  • Establishing a Routine Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Sleeping
  • Playing
  • Growth and Development

What are the hours of duty of a Maternity Nurse?Nurse

A maternity nurse is on duty 24 hours a day however, it must be recognised that if they are waking to carry out night feeds, they must be able to rest during the day when their duties are complete and their charge is sleeping.

It is usual that they will work for six days, followed by a 24 hour period off. If either party wishes a change to this schedule, it must be mutually agreed.
